Liquefied Petroleum Gas, widely known as LPG, is becoming more popular for a variety of
reasons. It is ‘greener’ than natural gas as it burns cleanly with no soot and very few sulphur
emissions, posing no ground or water pollution hazards. It is more readily available now
than ever before due to a growing network of suppliers. LPG is also becoming the first
choice with many consumers due to the current price fluctuations involved with natural gas.
It is, however, very different to natural gas in some ways. LPG is heavier than air, natural gas
is lighter. LPG works at higher pressures compared to natural gas.  In some ways LPG
needs to be approached and worked on with a different set of rules. Clean Heat UK
understands this, which is why our engineers are regularly schooled and tested according
to which gas family they are working with. For everyone’s safety.
The most popular types of LPG are mixes that are primarily propane, mixes that are
primarily butane, and mixes that include both propane and butane. Please note that in the
UK propane is considered to be the best alternative to natural gas as it is not affected by
temperature. Butane is not easily vaporized at low temperatures, so we would not
recommend it for general use. Another benefit of propane is that it comes in a variety of
cylinder sizes and is therefore easier to store a readily available amount.
Propane cylinder sizes vary from 3.9kg up to 47kg. Larger LPG storage vessels are called
‘bulk tanks’ and can be located above or below ground level. These ‘bulk tanks’ are
common in domestic properties where there are several gas-burning appliances, for
instance boilers, cookers and fires. They are becoming increasingly more common in
commercial and industrial use as an alternative to natural gas.
Clean Heat UK Services engineers are fully qualified, registered and insured to install, test,
maintain, service and repair all domestic LPG installations. Some examples of LPG works
we carry out are as follows:
